Salesian missionaries with Bosco Vikas Gramin Kendra in India support children in migrant communities in the Central Maharashtra region. The high internal migration in India results in children’s needs being overlooked as parents move to major cities for work. Salesians launched a project addressing challenges faced by youth in migrant communities, focusing on education, health care, better living conditions, healthy food, and inclusivity. Funding for the project was provided by Salesian Missions.
Migrant youth face obstacles in education, health care, and social integration due to the transient nature of their lives. The project encouraged children to attend study centers for various activities, allowing them access to classes, healthy meals, and other services. Study classes were held regularly for 193 boys and girls in six project hamlets, focusing on math and language. Monthly tests were administered to assess progress, with additional care provided to those in need.
Health and Nutrition Services
The project provided nutrition for 200 youth, ensuring they had at least one healthy meal a week. Parents were also informed about the importance of healthy nutrition through programs held by Salesians. Sessions were organized to inform parents about various services available to them, including health insurance, financial aid, and nutritional support. Around 2,300 people attended these sessions.
Health Screening and Awareness
Salesians conducted 12 health awareness programs for migrant children and the community. Educational sessions on personal health and hygiene practices were provided, and health camps were held where youth were screened for vaccinations and diseases like Dengue fever and malaria. Medicines were provided as needed following the examinations.
